ILLYA KAGAN
Plein Air Painter
Illya Kagan's expressive paintings capture the essence of the landscape. He works on location "en plein air" throughout the seasons, painting the changing light in broad brush strokes that are the hallmark of his inimitable style.
Illya Kagan was born into an artistic family. His mother, Erica Wilson, and his father, Vladimir Kagan are icons of their respective fields of needlepoint and furniture design.
Illya started his artistic career early, and developed his stlye during his academic years at Pomfret School, Skidmore College, and Lacoste Ecole de Beaux Arts.
Working from the beautiful landscapes of the French West Indies, to the Mountains of Colorado, to his home on the Island of Nantucket, Illya paints diverse subjects that bring the viewer to feel his strong connection with the place. The swirlling cirrus clouds of a summer sky , the heavy weight of an approaching winter storm, or the last light as it illuminates the skyline, are visual experiences that are brought to life on the canvas, and recreate in the viewer the emotion of being out in the landscape.
